The design included provisions for the construction of a second parallel taxiway in a subsequent phase of development. Four high-speed exits connected the runway to the parallel taxiway. The runway and all taxiways have both centerline and edge lights.
Centerline-to-centerline separation between the new runway and the existing north runway is 5,000 feet. The new runway system is connected to the existing airfield by two connector taxiways. The design of the connector taxiways included a bridge on each taxiway to permit the future construction of a spine road between the existing and proposed runways.
The project included an extensive drainage system featuring major new underground piping, large open outfall ditches, and new detention basins. The project’s electrical design involved the construction of a new airfield electrical vault and the transfer of electrical power and control functions from the existing vault to the new vault. The project cost for the New North Runway System 8L- 026Rwas in excess of $100M.
